1Password for Agents Lets AI Agents Sign In Without Seeing Your Passwords

1Password for Agents, launched October 22, lets personal AI agents sign into your accounts with per-session approval while your passwords stay inside your vault — free for Individual and Family plans.

1Password has launched 1Password for Agents, a platform that lets personal AI agents sign into websites on your behalf without ever receiving your username, password, or one-time code. The announcement landed on October 22, 2026, with integrations for Meta’s Muse, Anthropic’s Claude Duet, OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work and dots, SpaceXSI’s Grok Bot, and Town’s Townie.

What happened

AI agents are only as useful as the accounts they can reach. To book a restaurant, order supplies, or file expense reports, an agent has to log in — and that creates a nasty choice. As 1Password puts it, you can take over the session and type your username and password manually every single time (slow and tedious), or you can paste your password into a prompt, which hands the agent access to your credential, potentially far beyond the task at hand. Neither option is acceptable.

1Password for Agents removes the dilemma with an approval flow. When an agent reaches a sign-in form, it identifies itself to 1Password with a unique digital key and requests a specific credential from your vault. You see exactly which login the agent wants and why, then approve or deny it in 1Password. On approval, 1Password fills the credentials directly into the site’s sign-in form — the agent and the model behind it never receive the password.

Engadget, which covered the launch, adds a key technical detail: access is granted per session, limited to the specific items you approved, and not carried over. Passwords and one-time MFA codes travel through a secure channel managed by 1Password, staying outside the model entirely.

The launch roster is a who’s who of personal AI agents. Meta’s Muse and SpaceXSI’s Grok Bot get integrations rolling out over the coming days across all platforms. Anthropic’s Claude Duet, OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work and dots, and Town’s Townie (web and iOS) are listed as coming soon. Nine more builders — Instinct, Browserbase, Browser Use, Dana, KERNEL, Perplexity, Ramp, Tomo, and Wajo — are slated for later integrations.

“An agent should be able to do the job it’s been asked to do without getting permanent access to everything behind the account, and 1Password provides the trust layer that makes this possible across personal agent experiences,” said Aashish Tripathi, chief product officer at 1Password. The launch follows 1Password’s earlier Claude integration, introduced in July.

Why it matters for SMB

Small businesses are the natural audience for this. The tasks owners most want to delegate — ordering from suppliers, paying bills, booking travel, reconciling expenses — are exactly the tasks that require logins. Until now, the two realistic options were pasting passwords into prompts (a security nightmare) or staying up late doing it yourself (a scaling nightmare).

The per-session, per-item approval model maps well to how small teams actually work. Your bookkeeping agent can be approved for the supplier portal without ever seeing the owner’s bank login. You can disconnect an integration from 1Password at any time. And when a password changes, you update it once in the vault instead of in every agent’s memory — 1Password calls this out explicitly as a benefit for teams running multiple agents.

The pricing is the other SMB-friendly detail: there’s no additional cost for 1Password Individual and Family accounts. If your team already pays for 1Password, this arrives free.

One caveat, flagged by Engadget, is worth repeating: credential safety is not the same as action safety. An agent that can’t see your password can still order the wrong product or book the wrong vacation with no cancellation option. Keep human confirmation in place for anything that moves money, regardless of how the login is handled.

This also connects to stories we’ve been tracking. Claude Duet — covered here when it entered research preview — and OpenAI’s dots assistant are both launch partners, which suggests the agent platforms themselves see credential custody as the bottleneck to real-world use.

Pricing, availability, and what to do next

Pricing. 1Password for Agents is included at no additional cost with 1Password Individual and Family accounts purchased on 1Password.com. 1Password notes that availability, platforms, and capabilities vary by partner integration.

Availability. The Muse and Grok Bot integrations are rolling out over the coming days; Claude Duet, ChatGPT Work, dots, and Townie are marked “coming soon.” Accounts on 1Password.eu and 1Password.ca are not supported at launch.

What to do next. First, list which logins your agents actually touch — supplier portals, booking sites, banking — so approvals map to real tasks. Second, if you’re already on a 1Password Individual or Family plan via 1Password.com, there’s nothing new to buy; watch for the Muse and Grok Bot integrations as they roll out. Third, keep agent-side guardrails anyway: spending limits and a confirmation step before purchases, since a safe login doesn’t guarantee a safe action.
