Introduction
You’ve heard what Claude Agent Skills can do — reusable instruction packs that turn Claude into a specialist for your exact workflow. Our plain-English explainer covered the concept, and our beginner’s tutorial showed how to build one. But here’s the shortcut most small businesses miss: you don’t have to build your first skills from scratch. Anthropic ships pre-built Skills for the most common tasks, plus a free open-source library you can install in minutes. This tutorial walks through every install route — claude.ai, Claude Code, and the API — so your team can start using Skills today.
What You’ll Need
- A claude.ai account. To install custom or open-source Skills there, you need a Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plan with code execution enabled. The built-in document Skills just work — no install step at all.
- For Claude Code: the Claude Code CLI installed and a GitHub account to download the open-source skills.
The Skills You Already Have: Zero Install
Start where no setup is needed. Anthropic ships four pre-built Agent Skills for common document work, and on claude.ai they are active whenever you create documents — Claude uses them with no setup required:
- PowerPoint (pptx): create presentations, edit slides, analyze presentation content.
- Excel (xlsx): create spreadsheets, analyze data, generate reports with charts.
- Word (docx): create documents, edit content, format text.
- PDF (pdf): generate formatted PDF documents and reports.
To “use” one, just ask: “Build me a 10-slide pitch deck for our landscaping services” or “Make a spreadsheet that tracks monthly retainers with a revenue chart.” Claude detects the match and loads the Skill’s instructions automatically — nothing to download, nothing to configure. Note these document Skills are also available through the Claude API and Anthropic’s cloud partnerships, but not inside Claude Code (which bundles the open-source Claude API skill instead).
Step 1: Download an Open-Source Skill from Anthropic’s Repo
Beyond the built-in four, Anthropic publishes open-source Skills in its public skills repository on GitHub (github.com/anthropics/skills) — reference material, example skills, and tooling skills anyone can inspect and install. The Agent Skills format is now an open standard (contributed to the vendor-neutral Agentic AI Foundation in October 2026), and this repo is the canonical place to see what a well-made Skill looks like.
Pick a skill folder from the repo and download it. You need the folder itself — the directory containing SKILL.md — not the whole repository.
Step 2: Install It on claude.ai
On claude.ai, custom Skills upload as zip files:
- Zip the skill folder — with the folder inside the zip, and
SKILL.mdat that folder’s root. - Go to Settings > Features in claude.ai, find the Skills section, and upload the zip.
- The Skill is available immediately. Test it with a request that matches its description, e.g. “Create a quarterly sales report as a spreadsheet with charts” for a reporting skill.
Two facts worth knowing before you roll this out to colleagues:
- Skills on claude.ai are individual to each user. They are not shared organization-wide and can’t be centrally managed by admins — each teammate uploads their own copy of the zip.
- Skills don’t sync across surfaces. A Skill uploaded to claude.ai is not available in Claude Code or the API, and vice versa. Install separately wherever you work.
Step 3: Install It in Claude Code
Claude Code skips the upload step entirely — Skills are filesystem-based and Claude discovers them automatically:
- Copy the skill folder to
~/.claude/skills/<skill-name>/for a personal Skill available in every project. - Or copy it to
.claude/skills/<skill-name>/inside a project repo for a project Skill — commit it to git and every teammate who pulls the repo gets it immediately, no setup required.
For wider distribution, Skills can be shared through Claude Code Plugins, Anthropic’s packaging format for distributing skills (plus commands and hooks) to a whole team. This project-folder route is the closest thing Skills have to effortless team sharing — and it’s one reason technical teams often prefer Claude Code for Skills rollout.
Step 4: Use Pre-Built Skills Through the API (Optional)
If you automate with the Claude API, pre-built Skills are available by passing the skill_id (pptx, xlsx, docx, or pdf) in the container parameter alongside the code execution tool. Your own Skills upload through the /v1/skills endpoints and are workspace-wide. One constraint: API Skills run sandboxed with no network access, so any step calling an external service must be reworked.
Tips From the Field
- Match the surface to the job. Document production for non-technical staff → claude.ai. Developer workflows that live in git → Claude Code project skills. Automated pipelines → API skills. Don’t fight the sharing model; pick the surface that shares the way your team already works.
- Trigger skills with natural language. Describe the task the way the skill’s description is written — no slash command needed. If a Skill never fires, its description is missing your trigger phrases; rewrite it to say both what it does and when to use it.
- Treat Skills like installing software. Anthropic’s guidance: install only from sources you trust — ones you built or got from Anthropic. Audit every file first for network calls or file operations that don’t match the Skill’s stated purpose.
- Keep one install kit per skill. Save the zip and note where each copy lives (who has it on claude.ai, which repos carry it). When Anthropic updates an open-source Skill, re-download and re-install — there’s no auto-update.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a paid plan to use pre-built Skills?
The built-in document Skills (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, PDF) work on claude.ai with no setup required — just ask Claude to create a document. Installing additional Skills from files (custom or open-source) requires a Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plan with code execution enabled.
Why doesn’t my uploaded Skill appear on claude.ai?
Check three things: the zip must contain the skill folder (with SKILL.md at its root), your plan must support Skills with code execution enabled, and you must be on the same surface — a Skill uploaded to Claude Code or the API won’t appear on claude.ai.
Can my whole team use a Skill I installed?
On claude.ai, Skills are per-user — each teammate uploads the same zip. In Claude Code, a project Skill committed to .claude/skills/ reaches everyone who pulls the repo. Through the API, uploaded Skills are workspace-wide.
Are the pre-built and open-source Skills free?
Yes — there’s no extra charge for the Skills themselves. You pay only for your Claude plan or API usage as usual.
Are Skills safe to install from GitHub?
From Anthropic’s own repository, yes — but still skim the files first, and be far more cautious with community Skills. Never install one containing credentials or unexplained network calls. Note Anthropic’s data policy: Agent Skills are not covered by zero-data-retention arrangements, so Skill data follows standard retention.
