OpenAI on October 26, 2026 launched GPT-6.1 Terra, a mid-tier model built to do the screen work that fills an office day: reading what is on a display, clicking through apps, filling in forms and drafting documents. The headline for small businesses is price. Through the API, Terra costs $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, which OpenAI says is 50% lower than both the model it replaces, GPT-5.6 Terra, and its larger sibling, GPT-6.1 Sol.
What happened
OpenAI describes Terra as a fast, efficient model that combines detailed visual reasoning with precise computer use and clearer, more natural writing. In practice, computer use means the model looks at a screen, recognizes buttons and fields, and acts with clicks and keystrokes the way a person would when switching between programs.
The launch targets workday tasks rather than chat demos: drafting proposals, interpreting technical drawings, filling out forms and editing videos. OpenAI gives invoice entry as an example, with the model reading incoming invoices and entering their details into accounting software.
On OpenAI’s own benchmarks, Terra scored 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra on Agents’ Last Exam, a test of how well agents use software at work, at about a third of the cost per task. OpenAI also says Terra matches its flagship GPT-6 Astra on that test at one-tenth the price per token and finishes tasks more than three times faster than Astra and Sol. On an internal set of prompts designed to trigger errors, the error rate at low reasoning effort fell from 53.6% with GPT-5.6 Terra to 16.7% with Terra. These are vendor-reported figures, not independent results, and OpenAI’s benchmarks have not been independently verified.
Availability: Terra is rolling out in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users, and developers can call it through the API as gpt-6.1-terra. It is not available in regular Chat, a distinction that has confused some users. Amazon Web Services made it available on Bedrock the same day. The model has a 1,050,000-token context window, a June 1, 2026 knowledge cutoff, and accepts text and image input.
Why it matters for small business
Computer use is where AI spending actually goes. Most small-business AI work is not brainstorming, it is repetitive screen work: copying figures between systems, completing supplier forms, processing routine documents. A model priced for that volume changes the math on automating it.
Cheap does not mean careless. An independent accounting benchmark from DualEntry, which tested 22 models on 101 synthetic accounting cases, ranked Terra tied 18th overall at 78.2%, despite a low cost of $0.042 per task. It scored 100% on transaction classification but only 53.8% on accounts payable, and its consistency score was the second lowest in the test. The lesson for owners is to trial Terra on their own real tasks, with a human check before anything irreversible, rather than trusting a general benchmark or a low price.
Pricing, availability and what to do next
| Model | Input / million tokens | Cached input | Output / million tokens |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPT-6.1 Terra | $1 | $0.05 | $5 |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | $2 | $0.10 | $10 |
| GPT-6 Astra | $10 | $1 | $50 |
One practical note: cached input at $0.05 per million tokens matters for agents that re-read the same context across many turns, such as a support or bookkeeping assistant working from the same documents all day.
Terra also arrives in a busy week for AI vendors: Anthropic filed to go public this week, a reminder that the companies behind your tools are changing fast, and that today’s price advantage can shift with the next model release.
What to do this week:
- Try it on one workflow: If your team already pays for ChatGPT Work or Codex, pick one repetitive workflow and measure time saved against corrections needed.
- Keep a human check: Require confirmation before the agent sends, files or pays anything, and start with read-only tasks for financial work.
- Compare per-task cost: If you build with the API, test Terra against your current model on your own task set before switching, and compare the full stack in our AI Tools Pricing Index.
